Sound System at the Ostia Antica's Roman Theatre
Acoustic Coverage
Today, we are excited to share details of our collaboration with Isatec at the Roman Theatre of Ostia Antica. The primary objective of this project was to achieve optimal acoustic coverage without the use of any lifting or hanging structures.
In specific environments like the Roman theatre, this requirement is crucial to honor the architectural and cultural significance of the site.
In this captivating setting, which serves as a wellspring of inspiration for both artists and audiences alike, our primary mission was to provide Isatec with technical support and the appropriate materials. That’s why our aim was to attain a uniform acoustic coverage that envelops the entire audience, enhancing their overall experience.
The HL System
To meet this challenge, we employed the HL system as the central component, seamlessly integrated with other elements from the LIVE MKII line.
This solution indeed proved to be exceptionally effective and delivered outstanding results tailored to our specific requirements.
Now, let’s delve into the core of the project, dividing the installation into four distinct areas:
- Main Stage
- Side Extension
- Front Fill
- Stage Monitor
- MAIN STAGE
To cover the expansive main stage area, we utilized 4 HL15 speakers on each side, each with a horizontal dispersion angle of 25 degrees. This arrangement created a 100-degree horizontal coverage on each side, effectively encompassing the majority of the audience. (For production purposes, the systems were positioned on the stage itself.)
Additionally, to ensure the correct acoustic pressure for the lower frequencies, we strategically positioned six HL21S subwoofers in an Arc Delay configuration. This allowed a precise electronic delay control. This configuration guaranteed uniform pressure across all sections, regardless of their distance from the stage.
- SIDE EXTENSION
To extend acoustic coverage towards the sides and achieve overall homogeneity, we deployed two Point Source coaxial L15X active speakers at the edges of the stage.ย
- FRONT FILL
Positioned behind the proscenium, we installed four active point source speakers of the L10C MKII model. The objective here was to concentrate sound in the center of the stage, ensuring coverage for the front rows and optimal intelligibility. Specifically, we chose the C variant with constant directivity dispersion to achieve this goal.
- STAGE MONITOR
To maintain consistent playback quality on the stage itself, we relied on six active L12C MKII wedge speakers. Moreover these speakers boast a unique “low profile” multi-angle cabinet design, allowing for placement on the ground at either a 60-degree or 30-degree angle.
“Itโs nice to work with materials that donโt put you in trouble and that immediately give you what you need.”

Digital Speaker Management
The entire system is expertly managed by a Digital Speaker Management system. This component is indispensable when dealing with the design of intricate audio systems. Most importantly, with this tool, we can achieve precise calibration and meticulous control of the signal sent to the speakers. On the other hand it plays a pivotal role in ensuring an exceptional sound experience.
Teamwork
Our Brand’s quality
Above all our company continues to establish itself as a benchmark for high-quality acoustic projects. Providing tailor-made solutions that cater to the unique requirements of venues like the Roman Theatre of Ostia Antica is an exhilarating challenge we eagerly embrace.
